Alexander was born and raised in Pemberville, Ohio. He attended Purdue University for 3.5 years and graduated with Honors. As an undergrad, he worked in a USDA soybean molecular genetics lab, where he genotyped fatty acid increases and fine-mapped a high-linolenic acid gene in the soybean genome. 

Alexander’s research interests include gene editing using CRISPR and working towards developing more robust food crops for a more sustainable future. Outside of research, his interests include football (soccer), linguistics, backpacking, and playing Civilization VI.
